Why scalp care is the foundation of every good hair-care routine, and how to build one around your actual scalp type.

It's easy to focus entirely on the visible lengths of hair and forget that every strand grows from the scalp - which is skin, and can be oily, dry, sensitive or flake-prone just like skin elsewhere. A routine that only treats the hair itself is addressing half the picture.
An oily scalp generally benefits from more frequent, lighter cleansing; a dry scalp from gentler, less frequent washing and richer treatments; a flake-prone scalp from a targeted toner or treatment; and a sensitive scalp from simpler, fragrance-conscious formulas. Using the wrong approach for your scalp type - for instance, heavy oils directly on an already-oily scalp - can work against you.
Cleanse at a frequency matched to your scalp's actual oil production, use a scalp toner or targeted treatment if you have a specific concern like dandruff or sensitivity, and consider a gentle scalp massage while applying oil or toner to support circulation to the area.

An oily scalp feels greasy within a day of washing; a dry scalp feels tight and may flake from dryness; a sensitive scalp reacts easily to products or weather. Many people are a mix.
